Hotels and Accommodation

This is a guide on the hotels and hostels I personally have stayed in and I highly recommend due to comfort, quality, prices and geographical convenience. The great thing about Japan is regardless if it's a very high end hotel, or a budget hostel, there is never a compromise on service, cleanliness or quality.

If you are after something more of a traditional expereince, why not head over to our Kyoto Ryokan hotel page, Click here to find out more!

I have a relationship with Booking.com and agoda.com, whereby you can book your hotels via this page and get competitive prices, best deals and highest recommendations. It also means you’re supporting this website which I really appreciate, and helps me make more great content and tips for you to experience the best of Kansai! Arigatou!

Hotel Granvia Kyoto

► 5 star

► Price range: £150/€170/$200 approx per night

► Location: Central/main station

Hotel Granvia Kyoto is located in the main kyoto station which is an architectural marvel in itself. The hotel is a 5 star hotel with incredible service, amenities, free wifi, various services you'd expect from a 5 star hotel, restaurants, views across the city and station, and of course, excellent transport links as it is right in the main station. Kyoto station is the main station that has trains coming into, and going out towards other cities like Osaka, Nara, and other major cities on the bullet train leave and come from Kyoto station. So if you fancy a 5 star night or two after a long journey to Kyoto, then stay here. The price is relatively cheap for a 5 star which is excellent value. I would say the prices are more similar to that of a 3 star hotel. Hurry and book though as this hotel will get booked up fast as its relatively cheap and very conveniently located for a 5 star hotel.

Hotel Unizo Shijo Karasuma

►3 star

►Price range: £50/€56/$66 approx per night

►Location: central

Probably the most centrally located hotel, this is the most convenient if you only have a couple of days in Kyoto as you will be the closest to all the action! Located on the main central street of Kyoto - Shijo Dori. The hotel itself is very clean with excellent service. Great amenities, 24 hour english speaking reception staff, laundry room available, free wifi throughout. Loads of restaurants and convenience stores less than 30 seconds walk away.

A 5 minute subway ride from the main Kyoto station, and a 2 minute walk from Shijo subway station.

Karasuma Kyoto Hotel

► 3 star

► Price range: £70/€80/$90 approx per night

► Location: central

Another perfectly located hotel - about a 3 minute walk from Hotel Unizo, and similar to Shijo station. This hotel is located on Karasuma Dori which is the other main central street that bisects into Shijo Dori. This crossroads is basically the central of the city. The hotel itself is very clean with friendly English speaking staff at a 24 hour reception, banquet and conference rooms available, free wifi throughout the hotel, nice little souvenir shop and a starbucks right outside… but you're in Japan, don't go to starbucks! Go to a fun cat cafe or something!

Mitsui Garden Hotel

► 4 star

► Price range: £60/€68/$80 approx per night

► Location: central

A 4 star hotel for the price of a 3 star hotel! This place is very nice carrying great value for money for outstanding service and quality. The staff are very friendly and helpful, they speak english and the reception is 24 hour. Free wifi throughout the hotel, with great amenities including laundry room. This hotel has its own big Japanese bath and spa that is free for hotel guests to enjoy. Perfect to soak after a long day walking around and sightseeing. Mitsui Garden Hotel is one of my favourite in Kyoto. A 4 min walk from shijo subway station. Book soon as it tends to get full quick.

Hotel Mystays

► 3 star

► Price range: £40/€45/$53 approx per night

► Location: central

A simple, clean, and economic hotel for those on a budget but don't want to compromise on quality. Located on Shijo dori and a minutes walk from the hotels mentioned above, so top marks for geographical convenience. The staff all speak english and the reception is 24 hour. Ensuite bathrooms with bathtub, free wifi throughout, great amenities and free toiletries, and a great selection of rooms. This hotel places very high on my recommendations as it's basically similar prices as a hostel but its a 3 star hotel.

Hostels

Hostels in Japan are really great. They have cabins or bunks, but they a very private meaning you have your own mini room with a TV and sliding doors or curtains. The level of customer serivce in Japan is one of the highest in the world, and the level of service and quality you get in Japanese hostels would be like a 3 star hotel in Europe or America. Check out these personal recommendations that I have stayed in, and found to be truly outstanding.

Centurion Cabin and Spa - personal top recommendation!

► 3 star

► Price range: £30/€34/$40 approx per night

► Location: Central

Located on Shijo Dori (the main central street/high street), a 10 minute subway ride from Kyoto station, it’s in the middle of central Kyoto. Centurion cabin and Spa ranks highest on my list of recommendations. This place really is the best in terms of value for money, location, cleanliness and service, amenities and facilities, and all round convenience. You get your own private cabin with sliding doors for total privacy, with free wifi, storage space and lockers for valuables and flat screen TV’s in each cabin with free toiletries. Facilities include multilingual 24 hour help desk at reception, a nice lounge area with arcade games, souvenir shop, laundry room, private showers and a 24 hour radium hot spring bath and spa with sauna for guests to use anytime - ideal to soak in after a long day of taking in the sights. Shijo station is a couple of minute walk away, the famous Goin district (Geisha district) is a 10 minute walk away, Nishiki market and Pontocho are around a 7 minute walk away, and all the temples and shrines are no more than 30 mins by transport. I would highly recommend this place. Book asap though as it is extremely popular.

Hostel Kyoto Kizuna

► 3 star

► Price range: £25/€28/$33 approx per night

► Location: South Central

A clean new stylish hostel located on a quiet back street a few minutes from Kyoto station. Kizuna Kyoto Hostel is also one of my top recommendations, perhaps for those who fancy something slightly more calm than the other hostels as this hostel is located on a quite local street, still and helpful. Exceptional value as in other countries this kind of hostel would be more like a 3 star hotel. You can buy snacks and cheap drinks at in the lobby bar, laundry room is open 24 hours, private showers and washrooms on every floor, and you get free toiletries and amenities. Each cabin is very comfortable and has curtains for privacy. Lockers available for valuables.

► 2 Star

► Price range: £20/€22/$26 approx per night

Another clean new hostel that has popped up. The cabins here are very large and clean, with all the usual amenities. 24 hour friendly help desk, laundry room, toiletries, bathrooms and showers etc all available as standard. This place gets top marks for simplicity and cleanliness. Located a 5 minute walk north of Shijo Dori making it very conveniently located.
