The Ultimate Local Guide to Kyoto restaurants and bars - Best restaurants in Kyoto

Article was written by Ed

Kyoto has the highest amount of Michelin star restaurants relative to size than any other city in Japan (along with Osaka). Every unassuming back alley of Kyoto has some of the best and most delicious eateries in all of Japan, with traditional dishes and seasonal flavours, there is so much choice.

Here is a selection of my personal favourite eating spots in Kyoto. From Izakaya to ramen bars, I hope this guide can cater to your taste! This page will also have some guides on what to do in the evening in terms of Izakaya bars etc, which is more of an evening thing to do (Drinking alcohol and eating small platters of food) - this is Japanese Izakaya and its great fun.

This page is price descending. At the top of the page are the expensive and Michelin star restaurants and at the bottom are the fun bars and Izakaya. Enjoy my guide on where locals eat in Kyoto!

P.s. If you are travelling around Japan, it is worth buying a Japan Rail Pass. It'll save you time and money when travelling around Japans' very efficient Rail network. Matsu - Seasonal Japanese fine dining

►Price range: 15,000 to 25,000 yen per person

►Location: Katsura River - West Kyoto

At the top end of the price range and indeed quality range is Matsu. The restaurant has been owned by the same family for generations and currently is owned and run by the young brother and sister of the family. Matsu has been offered michelin stars on numerous occasions, however they choose to not accept as they want to keep their legacy fairly secret and within a small circle. They basically don't want all the attention that comes with receiving michelin stars. Indeed Michelin star chefs often come to Matsu to get inspired with recipes for their own restaurants. The menu varies from season to season, and never stay the same. Depending on weather you get a counter seat (which is very hard to get) or a table seat either on the ground floor or upstairs, you don't actually order anything, you just tell them what you can't eat, and they will accommodate. Dishes come out one by one, and usually around 15 courses. The food is absolutely exquisite. I would say that Matsu is the highest quality and best restaurant in Kyoto, perhaps all of Kansai. The counter seats are the hardest to get because you are in full view of the amazing process that goes into the creation of each dish, and the sheer attention to detail they take. It's incredible to watch and all of the ingredients are seasonal, and extremely fresh.

In order to book this place, please contact your hotel concierge. It's hard to get a table in this place, and they won't take bookings unless a concierge books it for hotel guests.

Takamatsu - Kyoto Style Kaiseki

►Price range: 10,000 -15,000 yen per person plus VAT

►Location: Central Kyoto - Shijo Dori

A Michelin star restaurants run by husband and wife. Located in a pretty backstreet off Shijo dori, this place is perfect for romantic couples or small groups of people after a Japanese Kaiseki experience. The food is seasonal, and prepared in courses and is exquisite. This place is one of those off the beaten path places that only Japanese know about. So if you want to book it, the best thing to do is ask your hotel concierge or front desk. Regarding allergies, best to tell the hotel concierge or front desk to notify them when they book. Bear in mind that you don’t order food. It is made in courses in front of you with the highest level of detail and art, so my advice is to not get too picky!! Oh and try to get a counter seat(s)! When you are there, just ask for ‘Omakase’. This basically translates to “I will leave it to you” meaning they will make the recommended dishes.

Sushi Spot

►Price range: Up to 10,000 per person

►Location: Gion

One of the best sushi places in Kyoto, and it's so incredibly well hidden! Located on Shinbashi dori, a small back street in gion, you will miss it you don't look carefully. The actual sushi restaurant is located in what looks like the entrance to a set of grotty apartments. The sushi bar can accommodate a maximum of 8 people, so it’s very personal and intimate. It’s a great place to go to with a partner or friend. Shinji san and his wife run the place on their own. Shinji san was a famous chef in American and won best sushi chef in America at one point. You’ll have to ask him where (he speaks good English). There is no particular menu here. It is all seasonal and he will make whatever the days speciality is. You can also say ‘Omakase’ which means “I’ll leave it to you” and he will make the recommended dishes and the days specials.

To book call: +81 75-531-3780 - he speaks great English don't worry!

Steak house Shishikin - Great beef!

►Price range: 2000-10000 yen per person

►Location: West central - By the river Kamo. 10 minute walk from central Kyoto.

A great steak house that is rather well hidden - just off the Kiyamachi dori which is a famous back street in Kyoto for its great restaurants, bars, and traditional Kyoto architecture. If you’re in the market for a big meaty feast then look no further. This steak house provides great cuttings of the best Japanese beef on a sizzling hot plate accompanied with Japanese rice. It’s a great place to come for lunch or dinner. In the evening expect a buzzing Izakaya-style atmosphere! I highly recommend this place. To get here you can walk from central Kyoto west along Shijo Dori and then turn off at Kiyamachi. Nearest stations are Kawaramachi and Gion Shijo (other side of the river).

Yonemura Gion - Amazing Japanese Kaiseki with a European fusion twist

►Location - Gion Downtown Kyoto

Located in the heart of the downtown area of Gion, which is also known as the Geisha District as it is the official locations of the Tea houses, is Yonemura Gion. The restaurant is fancy with a contemporary but Japanese style decor. The food is simply fantastic. It is traditional Japanese Kaiseki (multiple courses) but with an interesting Italian/European twist. I highly recommend here as the food is top notch and the atmosphere is great in Gion.

►Price Range: 10,000 yen per person

►Location: Central Kyoto

A stylish little restaurant with an unassuming exterior but an extraordinarily delicious menu.

Only the locals know about this place and the food is fantastic. It is a fusion of Japanese and Italian cuisine, with a stronger lean towards Italian. It is a course meal and the chef will recommend the specials. Located in Central Kyoto but not too in the super busy area.

Pontako - Pontocho - Okonomiyaki

Price range: 3000-5000 yen per person

Location: Pontocho - Downtown Kyoto central

Okonomiyaki and Takoyaki in the heart of Pontocho! The entrance of this place is unassuming (like all restaurants in Japan) but the food and interior is superior! Okonomiyaki is a style of cooking where savoury pancake style dishes and noodles are cooked on a hot pan in front of you. It's great fun and delicious. On the outside of the restaurant there is a man cooking Takoyaki, which are pieces of cooked octopus legs in a round batter ball. Delicious!

Yoshida Kitchen - Korean Japanese fusion dinner

►Price range: 2000-5000 per person

►Location: central Kyoto

Really fun place with a very warm and chatty host. She is the owner and will compliment you until your cheeks hurt from smiling so much. The restaurant is a counter layout and is great fun because you have to pick the food you want from the dishes laid out on the counter, of which she has prepared earlier that day. The food is incredibly delicious and has a slight Korean touch to it. It's like your Asian grandmothers cooking in a chilled atmosphere - Really recommend here!

Ask your hotel to book as she can't speak English. You can also Turn up if there is 4 or less, and hope there is space!

Gyuurakutei - Yakiniku - BBQ Wagyu Beef

►Price range: 2000-3000 yen per person

►Location: Central Kyoto

A great Yakiniku restaurant in central Kyoto. This place serves you excellent Wagyu beef which you then cook on the inbuilt BBQ grill in the table in front of you. You can order sides of Kimchi, rice, and other veggies. And of course, coupled with a good ice cold beer… you’re in business!  Yakiniku is one of my favourite meals in Japan. It is true what they say, Japanese Wagyu beef really does melt in the mouth.

Satonoya - Unlimited Yakiniku (Japanese Beef BBQ)

►Price Range: 2900yen per person. an extra 100 yen gives you unlimited beer too.

►Location: North Kyoto city

For 2900 yen you can have unlimited Japanese beef, other meat’s rice, veggies and other yummy foods for 90 mins. This is one place that I didn’t really want to recommend because I want to keep it a secret, but hey, sharing is caring right? This place is super super local, no tourists come here and it’s simply amazing. Yakiniku is my favourite Japanese food. It’s actually Korean in origin but the Japanese have taken it and improved it. You get a gas grill in the middle of the table and the guys at the restaurant will keep bringing you delicious meat to grill and rice to wash it down. So so good. For a little extra you get unlimited beer too. Be warned though, don’t wear any nice clothes here as it gets really really smokey and oily in there. Your hair and clothes will get soaked in oily smoke. But that's a sacrifice I’m more than willing to take for unlimited Yakiniku!

Yakitori- Daikichi

►Price range: 2000-3000 yen per person

►Location: central Kyoto

One of my favourite spots due to the friendly chef and great atmosphere. The restaurant is really tiny and very smokey, so don't wear your best clothes here because they will STINK of cigarette and cooking smoke after! The owner/main guy is super friendly and will try to practice his English with you by telling funny jokes and stories. The place serves chicken, chicken and more chicken. Basically, everything and every part of the chicken will be grilled on an open grill and served to you on little platters. Again, get a nice ice cold beer and you’re in business!!!! Don't worry, you can order in English here, the owner will be delighted to practice!

Kiharu - Japanese teishoku

►Price range: 1500-3000 yen per person (lunch)

►Location: central Kyoto

The casual but quite upmarket traditional Japanese food place is hidden away on Samegai dori in central Kyoto. Dishes are traditional teishoku (a bowl of rice, a meat/fish dish with miso soup, veggies and other small little accompanying dishes) lunch tends to be great here, as in the evening he gets booked up and the owner/ head chef is quite unfriendly and won't make space for you! The food is worth it though. Usually, you don't need to book this place, just turn up and there should be space!

Miyako Soba - Soba noodles and Herring

►Price range: 1000 yen per person

►Location: central Kyoto

A cute lunch spot that serves a traditional Kyoto dish which I highly recommend you try. The main dish is soba noodles in a hot soup with a piece of pickled Herring. This is a traditional dish in Kyoto. Herring is a sea fish, and as Kyoto is inland and far from the sea, Herring would be transported over the mountains into Kyoto. This was before the time of refrigeration technology and indeed vehicles, so the Herring would be pickled and preserved. The taste is sweet and delicious, and the flesh melts in your mouth. No need to book in advance here, just turn up.

They have two famous hot pot noodles. One called Black hell and the other called red hell. They are noodles in a hot pot with either soft chicken and eggs, or pork loin cutlets. Yummy!!

Hohei - Gyoza

►Price range: 2000-3000 yen per person

►Location: Gion, central Kyoto

I think this is the only Michelin star Gyoza joint in the world?! Gyoza are famously a fast food of Japan. They are basically hot pan-fried dumplings usually filled with chicken or pork, veggies and onion sprouts etc. They are delicious!! This restaurant was opened recently by a family friend, in the heart of Gion, the Geisha district of Kyoto. It serves all sorts of Gyoza, and coupled with an ice cold Japanese beer, there really is nothing better. No need to book, but get there early as there is usually a queue!

Izakaya and bars!

Izakaya is a great Japanese evening activity. Izakaya basically just means eating and drinking together at a restaurant. Izakaya restaurants will serve a great selection of Japanese alcohol accompanied with small dishes of food. I particularly love them as it's great fun getting a group of friends together and enjoying alcholic beverages while eating great food. The atmosphere is buzzing, loads of tipsy Japanese workers in suits in a cozy smokey and usually quite cramped, it's the perfect place to have a good get together. Here is my list of my favourite spots!

Don Rokkaku - cool local Izakaya with grilled chicken dishes

►Price range: 1500 - 3000 per person

►Location: Central, near Nishiki market

One of my favourite little Izakaya restaurants. It’s a 5-minute walk north of Shijo Dori, so really accessible and central. If you go upstairs, the room has tatami floor which you sit cross-legged on low tables. The walls are covered in graffiti and signatures of previous customers and you can put your name on the walls too! The food is fantastic - It's primarily a yakitori house (grilled chicken skewers) but also the alcohol is great. The head chef has been making yakitori for over 20 years so the food is exceptionally good. Get a group of friends together and enjoy!

Tori Kizoku - Izakaya with cheap drinks and grilled chicken dishes

►Price range: 1000 - 2500 yen per person

►Location: around kyoto and central

A chain of casual cheap izakaya that are all over Japan. There around 3 or 4 in Kyoto. 2 of which are on shijo Dori.  This place is also one of my favourites as it’s cheap, fun, has a great atmosphere, and every dish (including drinks) is around 300 yen which is ridiculously cheap! This place is popular for young people to come to as its so cheap yet delicious. So start making friends with the locals! No need to book, just turn up! If they are full there are others dotted around so check google maps.

Manzara Nishiki - Up market Izakaya

►Price range: 3000-5000 yen per person

►Location: central

Manzara is a chain of Izakaya restaurants. They have a few across Kyoto in places like Ponto Cho and Gion. Nishiki is in central, on the west side of Karasuma. It’s a fun place to go with a small group of friends. The food is fantastic and the drinks flow well. There are various small rooms that can fit around 4 or 5 people so you can have a good catch up with friends and not be disturbed by cigarette smoke and overly friendly tipsy Japanese businessmen… unless of course you’re feeling sociable and want to make new friends! To book, just turn up as it's not usually too busy - Only locals go here. But be sure to turn up a bit early.

Kiyamachi Dori Street

Kiyamachi dori is a great place to check out in the evening due to all the bars, Clubs and Izakaya. Regarded as a bit of a seedy area associated with Japanese gangsters and night workers, the area has a bit of a bad reputation amongst the older locals. However I have to disagree. It is the most vibrant and exciting part of Kyoto in the evening if you fancy a fun night out!

Torikizoku Kiyamachi-Dori (Street)

Fun, cheap, and open till late chicken grill restaurant. Torikizoku is a chain and has many restaurants around Japan, but this one if fun because it is in the Pontocho/Kiyamachi Dori area which is the bar and clubbing area of Kyoto.
