We hope you are staying safe during these testing times. Travel to Japan is not possible for the time being as Japan has shut its borders in order to prevent more infections of COVID19.
A great thing to do in the relentless summer heat is to go to the coast and swim in the sea. The temperature, while still very high, and the humidity, while also very high, doesn’t feel so bad as there is a nice Sea breeze. One of the best beaches in Kansai is Shirarahama beach in Shirahama (it’s confusing but there's an extra ‘ra’ in the beach name). The sand is super white, which is because it's imported from Hawaii and Okinawa, but let's ignore that, and the water is turquoise and super nice.
The sunsets here are unreal. And me being a photographer, it's heaven for me. You can see the stars here very well at night, so a good chance to do some astrophotography for all your camera nerds.
Also, the area of Shirahama is famous for its amazing natural hot springs which supply beautiful onsens (hot spring baths) and Ryokans (Japanese inns). You’ll find many here. Although I wouldn't recommend visiting these onsens during summer as its so hot outside and defeats the purpose of a hot bath, I would absolutely recommend you come when it's cooler/colder. A few of them have outdoor baths that look onto the sea. It’s very romantic and Japanese!
Shirahama hot springs supply the onsens and Ryokans. Enjoy a nice soak... but not in the summer... it's far too hot!
Another fun thing to do in Shirahama is to walk around on foot and explore the area. My friend and I did exactly this late at night and were rewarded with incredible views of the stars. Here are some photos of Engetsu Jima island with amazing Milky Way Galaxy.
There was a fireworks show there, which happens every year around the 17th of August. People donate a bit of money and then they send up fireworks to commemorate whatever the donor wants, like a new marriage, baby, etc.
Wakayama ramen bar. You know how obsessed I am with Ramen. We found a little Ramen place on the main street and it was so good. It has a Wakayama twist, which I’m not what exactly that is but its yummy. The main street has some fun restaurants and places to eat. All of which serve really good seafood. You can imagine how fresh it is.
