Off The Beaten Path Kyoto adventure tours

Off The Beaten Path Kyoto adventure tours

Kansai Local and the Founder, Ed have been running epic Edventure (see what we did there) tours around Kansai, more specifically around the hidden magical spots of Kyoto, Nara, Yoshino and the mountains that surround Kyoto.

One of the main and most popular experiences is the epic off the beaten path day Edventure tour, which starts at 9:30am and finishes in the evening/night on the same day. Without going into too much detail and spoiling the surprise, we will be visiting old and hidden shrines and temples, a mysterious bamboo forest that only Ed knows about deep in the mountains (where we will have a picnic), a few haunted spots, an abandoned old village, stunning mountains views, a refreshing river swim and some more hidden gems. This tour has been carefully put together to get guests to experience the real Japan, away from all the tourists. This is basically the mission of Kansai Local - experience true Japan with a real Local. So get ready for an awesome adventure!

If you are interested in joining one of the most popular adventure day tours in Kansai, want to make new friends from all over the world, and you're up for an epic expedition to see the off the beaten path places around Kyoto, get in touch below and we will get back to you and details.

Such a great and fun experience! One that is really adventurous as well, by hiking a lot and going through the bamboo forest. Ed makes the tour super fun and you are going to places where you normally, as a tourist, would never come. I had a great day and I really recommend everybody to do this tour when they are in Kyoto! You won’t regret it :)

Super fun day fuilled with activities. You really get to see the diversity of Japan. Not only the history but also day-to-day life, such as - nature, temples, restaurants, myths and mystique with a twist of adventure. I strongly recommend Ed and his tours. Get ready to walk!

Hands down one of the best things we did in Japan. It’s such a great and unique way to see some parts of Kyoto that most people would miss. The group of people were so much fun and Ed is a great guide and host, making sure everyone has the best time with his knowledge and humour! Can’t recommend this one highly enough!

Have to admit, this was one of the highlights about my solo trip to Japan. Ed's knowledge of Kyoto and Japan in general is fantastic and because of this I was able to see and experience parts of Kyoto that not many people get to see. Also the atmosphere that Ed is able to bring out in a large group was great which makes it really easy to make new friends along the way. Next time I'm back in Japan I would love to do this tour again.

This is one tour you want to make time for. My brother and I did this our first day there and it was a perfect introduction to Kyoto. Ed's trip takes you to all the places you wouldn't normally see while also moving through some key tourist destinations. The bamboo forest was beautiful and so much better the main grove everyone else goes to. Ed does a really great job at bringing people together and creating a lively atmosphere for his groups - we left the day feeling like we knew everyone and had gained friends. This was a wonderful day filled with hidden places, being outside, meeting new people and seeing Kyoto in a way we never expected to. Grateful to have stumbled upon Ed's tour - you definitely need to go!

Be prepared it’s a full day of walking. This was extreme! Ed is super chilled and can answer all your Japanese questions. He also knows the good spots in Kyoto.

What a day :D

This tour was great, one of the best bits of our trip to Japan! Ed takes you off the beaten track to places we would never have found if we were on our own.
There was no-one else in the bamboo forest where we were and the dip in the river at the end was exactly what we needed at the end of the day!

What set this trip apart from others we've been on is Ed. He's a very likeable guy and is clearly passionate about Japan and the outdoors. Thanks so much for an awesome day!

Favorite part of japan was honestly this trip. Made so many friends, walked a difficult trail and had plenty to eat. Edgar is a great time and I loved the whole trip. Always take the beaten path.

This was one of those experiences you believe can only happen in a movie. Have a highball and follow Ed to some of the most incredible places you'll ever seen, in Japan, or anywhere else you might travel. Well worth every single yen for this amazing adventure! And, I used an exclamation mark so it must be true.

The most important thing at first. I was a blast. I spent 3 month in kyoto and at the end of my stay I wanted to something what not everyone did. I recommend this edventure to everyone. At the beginning Ed brought everyone together, like we know each other for a long time. During the the whole day he kept an eye on everyone that no one is falling behind and is save.
The hike to the bamboo forest start with a nice mountain and a good wake up call for us. We even saw some monkeys there. The bamboo forest is gorgeous and so different from the one you see in Arashiyama with all the tourists. It's a big contrast you even can experience on this trip.
When we went to the abandoned village we had to go through a long one way tunnel. This tunnel is scary and beautiful at the same time, I took so many pictures there. On the other side is this amazing river and bridge, it looks so nice. I love to come back in athum to see this place in all this beautiful colors. In this village is really no one, instead of us.
This edventure brought so many people together that even now I'm still in contact with some of them.

Enjoy this edventure like I did and make awesome new friends.

This is truly a unique experience. Ed takes you to some greats places. The temples were beautiful and so peaceful (dramatic difference with the other temples where all other tourists go to). The bamboo forest was outstanding, and Ed doesn't go too fast on the track, which doesn't make it to exhausting - but it's still a bit of a work out! It's also great that Ed is a great photographer, and he then shares the photos with the group. And Ed was able to create a great group atmosphere where we had a grand time! If you're hesitating, let me tell you that this ed-venture is worth every yen!

You must not miss this opportunity if you want to experience spirited away shrines, secret bamboo gardens, and the adventurous side of Kyoto without other tourists. Ed was a truly fantastic host - took professional quality photos and kept the group happy throughout. I will be dreaming of this day when I'm back at work. Great trail with some amazing scenery. Our nice day out in nature turned out to be an interesting adventure. Nothing dangerous. We did have to go down a really steep slope though, so wear some good hiking shoes.

An absolutely stellar experience with an expert and charismatic guide whose got a wealth of knowledge about Kyoto and the Kansai region. Ed immersed us in the Japan that HE knows — a secret hike in a bamboo forest, impressive temples visited by locals, and quaint Miyazaki-esque towns, hidden from tourist traffic.
Ed also takes extra care to foster a close-knit group dynamic. He’s very enthusiastic about getting to know each of us and making sure we connect with each other. We had a lot of laughs, shared many stories, and left with unforgettable memories.
With such an affordable price for such a holistic itinerary, you will not find another experience like Ed’s tour.

I took the Kyoto adventure tour with Edgar in April of 2019 on a three week tour of Asia, and it was the high point of my trip. Ed took us to remote parts of Kyoto rarely seen by foreigners. We hiked in a bamboo forest and visited an amazing Buddhist temple - Ed’s favorite in Japan. One of the most fascinating things about the day was watching Ed interact with the locals. As you can see from the photos of Ed - who has a Japanese mother and British father - he does not look even remotely Asian. When he addressed the locals in high Kyoto Japanese, the look of amazement in their eyes was worth the tour, which turned to a smile when he advised them that he was Japanese. They would then turn to our small group (an American, an Australian, and a Filipino) half expecting us to start rattling off Japanese just like him. An amazing experience. I am going to seek him out on my next trip to Kyoto. Don’t miss out on a tour with him.

Only being in Kyoto for two days during Golden Week (which is probably the worst time to go there, cause it is unbelievably crowded), I was so glad I booked this tour by Ed. He showed us places I would have never found on my own and most of the time we were the only tourists around. The bamboo forest was beautiful, but be prepared for quite a hike and think of change for public transportation to get there - keep in mind it's totally worth it though! We visited several other places, always avoiding the crowds and at the end of the day we were all happy to have joined this adventure.
Even though the official part was over, Ed took most of us to a Bar in the city centre to let the evening end. It was a great day altogether and I can only recommend it!

This tour was spectacular!! We started off around 9am and grabbed some food from one of the stores in the station for our picnic. We then headed to a forest and started a strenuous (but completely rewarding and WORTH IT) hike to reach this stunning, pristine, untouched bamboo forest. We had our picnic there, took a few fun pics, then continued on our way. We wandered through beautiful neighborhoods in Kyoto, went through a "haunted tunnel", walked past a peaceful river (you can go swimming in some parts of the year... I took this tour in April so the water was still a bit frigid). We then walked up through an abandoned neighborhood in a forested area. Altogether, Ed was wonderful. He told us about the area, bits about Japan's history, and was overall a fun and engaging person to speak with about anything really. We ended the evening by walking across Togetskyu Bridge and witnessed the most electric sunset. LOVED the tour so so so much!!! A must-do!!!
Also, 90% of the places we went to had only local people. We didn't have to (slowly!) move through crowds of tourists; in fact, we were the only people in the secret bamboo forest! This definitely was a plus for my mother and I!

The day long hike over a mountain with Ed was a wonderful break from the usual tourist activities, although there is some of that folded in during the day long activity. It was really nice to experience the less explored aspects of Kyoto (& Japan) and participate in an adventure under the reassuring guidance of an experienced local. Really enjoyed the day out from all the cultural aspects of Kyoto to immerse in the nature that surrounds this amazing city.

We couldn't have chosen better tour and guide. We only had 2 days in Kyoto and dedicated one completely to Ed's tour.
It was such a great experience, especially for the friendly atmosphere and the stunning places Ed was taking us to. It really felt like a day in the outdoors with your own friends, with lots of laughing and unforgettable landscapes, which you would not be able to find on your own, or with the help of any other usual guide.
We also managed to spot a couple of monkeys! :D
Highly recommended for whoever loves making friends, trekking, long-distance walking, jumping gates of hunted houses and booze.

We started by buying lunch to eat in the bamboo forest then made our way up into the mountains to the forest! It really was off the beaten path! Climbing and clambering up through the forest was so much fun! After lunch we then made our way through Arashiyama to a beautiful river where went for a FREEZING but welcoming swim! Which we would never of found or new about without Ed! After the day we met up in the evening for dinner and I eventually stumbled into my hotel about 2am after some Shisha smoking and plenty to drink! An awesome day and great value for money! Thanks Ed!!

We only had enough time to spend one day with Ed, but what a day it was. We met at the train station and bought a pack lunch, and then Ed took to a location on the outskirts of kyoto where we began trekking through a secret bamboo forest trail; not another person / tourist in sight (unheard of during Sakura season) I will never forget sitting down to eat in a natural clearing deep in the middle of a bamboo forest. If you decide to do this you definitely won’t regret it. Ed was also very knowledgeable about the local shrines and many other interesting areas close by that we most definitely would not have seen or learned about had we gone with a run of the mill guide! Thanks Ed. We will definitely be back!

Amazing guide and tour! Despite being in the middle of the Golden week Ed managed to avoid the crowd and take us to an epic exploration tour of the hidden gems around Kyoto. He's really good in creating nice groups Dynamics as well, that is essential to enjoy fully the experience... definitely recommended!

Is was an amazing day. Not only that Ed created a comfortable and peaceful atmosphere, he showed us brilliant places which we will never forget. We visited hidden and non-touristic shrines, had dinner in the middle of a silent and beautiful real bamboo forest (you better wear solid shoes ;-)) and saw many more places that we will remember for long.
Absolutely recommendable especially of you want to see Kyoto apart from typical tour guides. Ending the tour we watched the sunset at a river which was just another great idea.

The tour was definitely one of a kind. Ed gave us a very authentic experience. I liked how we were able to see parts of Kyoto that no other tourists knew about. I definitely enjoyed and loved Japan even more!
